Sunburn on Your Scalp Is Real. Let’s Talk About It.

July 22, 2026 · April Mullen

Every July it’s the same conversation. A guy sits down in my chair, leans his head forward, and I see it before he says a word. Red scalp. Flaky in spots. He tells me his head’s been itching and he figures it’s dandruff or dry skin or something he ought to buy a special shampoo for.

And nine times out of ten it’s not dandruff. It’s a sunburn. On his scalp. Same as the back of his neck, just up top where he never thinks to look.

I’ve been cutting men’s hair for forty years around here — Winchester, Gore, Cross Junction, all of it. And the guys who work outside are the ones who get hit the hardest, because nobody ever told them their scalp could burn.

Yeah, Your Scalp Burns Too

The skin on top of your head is skin. It sunburns like any other patch of skin you leave out in the sun all day. The difference is you can’t see it, and your hair fools you into thinking you’re covered. By the end of a long week in the sun it’s red, it’s tight, it peels, and it itches like crazy. That’s not flakes. That’s damage healing up.

And if your hair’s thinning, or you’ve got a part that shows scalp, you’re even more exposed. Less hair up there means less shade. More skin catching sun every time you look down at what you’re working on. I’ve got guys in their thirties dealing with this because their hairline’s moved on without them.

A Hat Helps. It Doesn’t Fix It.

I know what you’re thinking. You wear a hat all day, so you’re fine. And a hat does help — I’m not telling you to ditch it. But a ball cap leaves the back and sides wide open, and a hard hat’s got those vents and gaps that let sun right through.

There’s also what’s happening under that hat. You sweat all day, you maybe sprayed some sunscreen up there, you’ve got dust and dirt and whatever else from the job site. All of it gets trapped against your scalp under a cap that doesn’t come off till you get home. That buildup is half the reason your head feels so cruddy by Friday.

So a hat’s a start. It’s just not the whole answer.

What Actually Helps

There’s scalp sunscreen now — sprays and lightweight stuff made for the top of your head that won’t leave you greasy. You hit your part, your hairline, anywhere skin shows, and you reapply if you’re out all day. Takes ten seconds. Feels like nothing once you get used to it.

The cut matters too. If you’re thinning up top, going too short can actually expose more scalp, not less. I can cut it so it works with what you’ve got — enough to give your head a little cover without looking like you’re hanging onto something that left years ago. That’s the kind of thing we figure out in the chair. The consultation’s free if you just want to talk it through.

And if your scalp’s already feeling rough from a summer of buildup, a scalp exfoliation is forty dollars and about thirty minutes. It clears out the sweat and sunscreen and grime that’s been sitting up there, and your head honestly feels brand new walking out. I’m not saying you need it every visit. But once at the back end of summer? Your scalp will thank you.
