School’s Starting. Dad Needs a Haircut Too.

Here’s how back-to-school season goes in most houses I know. The kids get the new shoes, the new backpacks, the haircut before picture day. Mom squeezes in her own appointment somewhere if she’s lucky. And dad? Dad’s standing in the kitchen the night before school starts, running a hand over the back of his head going, “Yeah, I probably need to do something about this.”

Every August it’s the same. So this one’s for the guys — because you need a cut too, and getting it handled is a whole lot easier than you’re making it.

You got pushed to the bottom of the list

It’s not a complaint, it’s just how it shakes out. Everybody else’s back-to-school stuff has a deadline attached — a first day, a picture day, a sports physical. Yours doesn’t, so it slides. It turns a chore into something almost pleasant. And honestly, half the time the wife’s the one who texts me to set it up because she’s tired of looking at his neckline.

Bring the kid too while you’re at it

And dad — if you’ve got a boy who needs a back-to-school cut, bring him along. A children’s cut runs twenty-five dollars, same as yours, and there’s something good about a kid seeing his dad get his hair done like it’s a normal part of taking care of yourself. I’ve done plenty of father-and-son back-to-backs the week before school starts. Both of you walk out looking sharp for that first day, and you didn’t have to make two separate trips.

Get ahead of the rush — for real

I’ll be straight with you about the timing. The week before school starts is the busiest my book gets all month, because that’s when everybody finally remembers. If you can think a few days ahead and grab a slot now, you’ll get the time that actually works around your job instead of whatever’s left. One chair means once the good afternoon and early-evening slots are gone, they’re gone.
