The Guy’s Guide to Looking Good at Every Holiday Party This Year

October 1, 2026 · April Mullen

Every year it’s the same. Somebody sits down in my chair the second week of December, looks at me a little sheepish, and says “we’ve got the company party Saturday — can you do something with this?” And I always can. But I’ll tell you who walks into those parties looking the sharpest: the guy who came to see me in October, not the one scrambling the week of.

So consider this your early heads-up. Holiday party season sneaks up on the guys worse than anybody, because most men aren’t looking three weeks ahead at a calendar full of gatherings. Let’s fix that.

The cut has to be timed, not rushed

Here’s the thing about a men’s cut that nobody tells you. A fresh cut the day before a party doesn’t look its best. It looks new — a little stiff, a little too clean around the edges, like you’re wearing a haircut instead of just having good hair.

The sweet spot is about a week to ten days out. That’s when a good cut settles in, softens at the lines, and starts looking like it just grows out of your head that handsome. So if you’ve got something on the books for mid-December, the smart move is sitting in my chair the first week of the month, not the day before. You walk in looking like yourself, only sharper.

The beard is where most guys lose it

I see a lot of good cuts undone by a beard that nobody touched. You can have a sharp haircut and a nice shirt and still look unfinished if the beard’s creeping up your cheeks and running wild down your neck. It’s the first thing people notice in a holiday photo, and it’s the easiest thing to get right.

A beard lives and dies by two lines — the cheek line up top and the neckline below. I clean both up, follow the shape of your face, and take the bulk down so it reads intentional instead of accidental. Fifteen dollars, twenty minutes, and your whole face looks put-together. Pair it with a cut and you’re squared away for every gathering between Thanksgiving and New Year’s in under an hour.

And if the air’s already drying your beard out and you’ve got that itch and flaking under there — that’s dry skin, not the beard. A little beard oil worked down to the skin handles it. I’ll show you.

One trip, both of you

A lot of the guys I see came to me because their wife or girlfriend already does. And honestly that’s the easiest holiday plan there is — have her line the two of you up back-to-back. She gets her color refreshed, you get a cut and beard trim, and you knock the whole “looking good for the season” thing out in one quiet trip out to Gainesboro. No waiting room, no rotation, no sitting around — just the two of you in a calm studio off Stony Hill Road, done and out.

I’ve got fellas who drive in from Gore, Cross Junction, and Stephens City for exactly this. The drive out here is part of it — you leave the busy part of town behind and it’s quiet by the time you pull in.

Get ahead of it

Party season is short and it stacks up fast. The first two weeks of December everybody and their brother wants their hair done before the same handful of weekends, and I keep one chair. The guys who plan it out in October and early November get the good slots. Everybody else takes what’s left.

So if you know you’ve got a party, a family gathering, or photos coming, get on the books now. Book online at stonyhillstudio.glossgenius.com any time of day or night, or call me at (540) 877-4057 if you’d rather just talk it through. Let’s have you walking into every holiday thing this year looking like you meant to.
